WALLACE HAS BEST RUN OF SEASON IN TALLADEGA SHOOTOUT
It took veteran driver Kenny Wallace and his Stacker 21/Northeastern
Supply Company sponsored race team 8 races into the 2004 NASCAR Busch Series season for
something positive to happen, and Talladega, AL just happened to be the place.
In Saturday afternoon's Aaron's Rents 312 event on the world's fastest
speedway, Talladega Superspeedway, Wallace posted a very solid 6th place finish for his
first top 10 effort of 2004. It enabled Wallace to jump 6 spots in the overall driver's
points standing to 12th and back into the championship hunt.
"We were able to stay with the lead pack of cars all day because our
car really drafted well. I was able to pick my spots and use the air to my advantage and
it certainly feels good to come home with a good finish. Maybe we've finally turned the
corner," Wallace said after the race. Kenny was one of 11 different drivers who were able
to take their cars to the front and lead at least one lap.
Martin Truex, Jr.., driving a Chevrolet owned by Dale Earnhardt, Jr.,
won for the second time this season with the race ending under caution after a 6-car
wreck on the next to last lap that too out some of the top runners. Wallace was able to
avoid the incident to protect his best finish of the year.
Ron Hornady, rookie Kyle Busch and Jason Leffler rounded out the top
five finishing positions.
The Busch Series returns to action next Saturday at California Speedway
with the green flag to fall at 4 p.m. EDT.
