WALLACE POSTS 18TH PLACE NASHVILLE FINISH BUT MAINTAINS HOLD ON 10TH PLACE IN STANDINGS
Kenny Wallace posted an 18th place finish in
Saturday night’s Federated Auto Parts 300, NASCAR Busch Series race that was
delayed for nearly three hours by rain showers and lightning in the Lebanon, TN
area, home of the Nashville Superspeedway.
Wallace started his Stacker 2/Northeastern Supply Company
Chevrolet in the 12th position. He remained on the lead lap through
the early going, even leading the race at one point, but circumstances put
Wallace’s machine three laps in arrears by the race’s end. The race ended under
caution after leader Kyle Busch ran out of gas and also spun his car into the
infield grass, enabling Jason Leffler to inherit the lead and claim his first
career Busch Series victory under the yellow flag as rain fell. Busch ended up
17th, 2 laps down.
Saturday’s disappointing finish marked only the third time
in the last nine races that Wallace had not finished in the top ten.
Point leader Martin Truex, Jr. finished second to stretch
his advantage to 45 points over Busch in the driver points standing after 15 of
the 2004 season’s 34 scheduled races. David Green, who finished a dismal 34th
after completing only 143 of the race’s 225 laps, is third but 253 out of the
top spot.
Wallace was able to remain tenth in the points standing by
is now 531 points behind the leader. He will try to close that gap next
Saturday night when the Busch Series moves to Sparta, KY and Kentucky Speedway
for the Meijer 300 that is scheduled to take the green flag at 8 p.m., EDT. The
race will be televised live nationally by the FX Cable Network.
