In today's world, one can hardly find time to reflect on the real meaning of this holiday season.
From as early as Labor Day until after New Year's Day, holidays are accompanied by constant advertising and excessive commercialism.
While this may be beneficial to the bottom line of the corporations who are pushing their goods, as well as those who may have an interest in these corporations, we need to look at things that are generally forgotten.
Holidays, football and turkey, parades, fun with friends and neighbors, and a house full of excited and jubilant children is reason enough to be thankful.
You look into the kitchen and see all of the dinnertime adornments and begin to understand how turkey, cranberries, and stuffing all work together for you, and you're thankful.
This holiday, we want to urge you to remember some things that are generally overlooked when we are in the midst of a family celebration.
Think of your freedom, think of your good fortune, think of all of the people who made you who you are.
Remember your youth (for you will never have it again), and think of ways to help the children of the future get the best possible start.
Remember the simple things, like flying kites and jumping in leaves, tire swings and climbing trees, riding your bike, family walks, long family drives, and family stories that will never be forgotten.
These are the things holidays are made of!
But most of all, remember those less fortunate than you, and strive to make their holiday a time when they can reflect on their own good memories.
We at Northeastern wish you and your family a safe, healthy, and memorable holiday!
